Therapeutic Art Workshops: Research-Backed & Designed to Support Mental Health

Therapeutic arts are an accessible space focused on process over perfection.

As a Doctor of Occupational Therapy trained in expressive and therapeutic arts, I bring both clinical expertise and creative facilitation skills.

Activities are adapted in real time for varying physical, cognitive, and emotional needs while maintaining dignity and engagement.

Children in a LA-based therapeutic arts workshop, painting colorful abstract artwork on paper, with paint palettes, brushes, and bottles of paint on a black table.

Research shows* that engaging with our hands is inherently healing and can support:

  • Brain Function

  • Emotional Expression

  • Stress Reduction

  • Social Connection

Location: An art workshop. Watercolor paintings of various flowers on white paper, brushes, and watercolor palette on a tabletop. A bowl of green tea with a brush inside is also visible.

Here’s how those benefits come to life:

  • Fine Motor Coordination is enhanced through acts like cutting, painting, moving, and drawing.

  • Memory is Stimulated as participants create. A sense of nostalgia and cherished stories often rise to the surface, along with personal discovery.

  • Meaning-Making opportunities are inherently embedded into the act of creating.

  • Social Bonds are enhanced, as participants share in storytelling and artistic expression together.

  • Creative Expression extends beyond the workshop. Participants learn skills for continued expression at home.

Art Workshops Can Look Like…

People gathered around a table engaging in an arts and crafts activity, crafting designs with real leaves and flowers on paper.

Nature-inspired projects support fine motor coordination and release the need for perfection.

Creativity taking place in an art workshop led by Dr. Jenna Freeman - white table with magazines, a spiral notebook, a pen, a pink water bottle with a black lid, decorative stones, a green bracelet, printed photos, and cut-out images and papers.

Art-making techniques like collage support fine motor coordination, calm the nervous system, cultivate curiosity, and help us access parts of ourselves words can’t always reach.

Several people are gathered around a large sheet of paper with a flower diagram drawn on it, using small pressed flowers and plant parts to fill in the diagram.

Projects that are co-created or made solo, to enhance reflection and communication.

Our sessions can take place online (in CA and worldwide) or in the Greater Los Angeles area.

Sessions are practical, collaborative, and personalized.

OT Services are offered in your home, out in the community, or virtually.

We can even meet at the mall, the grocery store, or the park.

I offer services in the environments where life actually happens. Meeting in real-life settings allows us to practice skills in context — so strategies are easier to apply and more likely to stick.
